I now have a pembroke welsh corgi with DM.
Ricco was 1 of 8 pups my sisters male and female produced.
My sister kept 2 of the pups and I took 1.
Her male and female both became afflicted with DM.
1 was born on the east coast and the other was born on the west coast.
She took them twice weekly to swim.
Even tried to get her female acupuncture.
She purchased a rear support harness(walk-about harness)http://www.walkaboutharnesses.com/ and a cart (eddies wheels) http://www.eddieswheels.com/.
I can not stress enough how important these items have been for us!
As you must have figured out by now, the 3 off spring also got DM. :(
Ricco was the last to have symptoms.
I prayed and prayed it would bypass him!
Unfortunately, my prayers were not answered.
I feel like I am on an emotional roller coaster daily!
My sister and husband have gone through/are going through this for the 4th time!!!
They have lost 3 of her 4 corgis to this AWFUL disease ( 2 months ago she lost the 3rd)!!!!!!!!!!
HOW SHE AND HER HUSBAND HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DEAL WITH THIS 4 TIMES IS AMAZING IN ITSELF!(fyi...it doesn't get any easier)
My heart is breaking knowing I will have to make that dreaded decision we all eventually have to make!
Corgis are notorious for not wanting to move when you put them in a cart or harness!
All I can say is PATIENCE is imperative!
Getting a cool bed III has worked out well.
Also, a memory foam matt/bed (from OC K-9) http://www.ock9.com/shop/ and pooch pads(these are washable) http://www.poochpad.com/ are wonderful!
With these products the accidents they often have are easily cleaned up.
I have been reading a lot lately about DNA testing for DM and stem cell research. It will be too late for our dogs, but I hope and pray we will have more answers or a treatment/cure for this devastating disease!!!
